Tens of thousands of people, including prominent Catalan politicians such as Quim Torra, Artur Mas and Roger Torrent, protested on the streets of Madrid on Saturday against the trial of a dozen separatist leaders, who face years in prison for participating in the Catalan independence declaration of October 2017.

Waving Catalonia flags and holding banners such as "There is no justice", many of the supporters of the divorce between Catalonia and Spain believe the defendants are "political prisoners."

"Someone can support the independence or not but what is going on today at the Supreme Court with this fake trial is an infringement of fundamental rights," Torrent said.
