With US President Donald Trump gearing up for re-election in 2020, donations from him and his family to Democratic contenders is casting its shadow on the liberals’ front.

Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker are among those receiving donations from Trump or his daughter, Ivanka, along with Joe Biden, John Kerry and Terry McAuliffe, Politico reported Tuesday, citing donation records.

Paying politicians for favorable zoning exemptions or tax abatements has a long history among New York businessmen.

“This was completely irrespective of anything to do with principles, political perspectives,” said Gwenda Blair, a Columbia University journalism professor who wrote “The Trumps: Three Generations That Built an Empire.” “It was about levers of power, period. And this has not changed. This has never changed.”

The US president has previously spoken out about donations to his opponents but the new funding records could destroy the credibility of the Democrats, who are stressing their distance from Trump in the 2020 campaigning.

“It’s interesting: I was looking at the ones I’m running against. I’ve contributed to most of them. Can you believe it?” Trump said once in an Iowa stop during the 2016 primary campaign. “I’ve given to Democrats. I’ve given to Hillary [Clinton]. I’ve given to everybody! Because that was my job. I gotta give to them. Because when I want something, I get it. When I call, they kiss my a**.”

Bernie Sanders, who is running again in 2020, kept criticizing Clinton in 2016 for her sources of money, including paid speeches to Wall Street firms.
