Four Pakistani nationals killed in India shelling of Kashmir
Pakistani officials say four civilians have been killed in India’s shelling of the disputed Kashmir region amid growing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Pakistani officials say three members of a family were among the dead after an Indian mortar shell hit a house along the line of control.
New Delhi and Islamabad regularly accuse each other of firing across the heavily-militarized de facto border in the Himalayan region.
The shelling comes hours after India launched airstrikes inside Pakistan under the pretext of targeting the camp of a militant group that was behind a recent suicide attack on Indian forces.
The camp is believed to belong to the Pakistan-based militant group, the so-called Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), which claimed responsibility for the attack that killed 44 Indian forces in Pulwama, in Indian-administered Kashmir, on February 14.
Pakistan has denied India's claim that the aerial attack had inflicted casualties on militants.
Islamabad has also warned that it will respond to the Indian aggression in due course.
Tensions between the two neighbors have drawn international attention. China and the European Union have called for both sides to show restraint.
Iran’s foreign ministry also called on the two sides to exercise restraint and resolve tensions peacefully.
Tehran “calls on the two countries of India and Pakistan to [exercise] restraint and make more efforts to reduce tensions and peacefully settle the existing differences and problems through dialog,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Tuesday.
