Iran lauds Syria resistance

Iran’s Leader says the key to Syria’s victory over the US and its puppets during the war on the Arab country was the Syrian president and people’s perseverance.  Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei was speaking during a meeting with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in Tehran. The Leader said Syria emerged victorious from a war waged by a US-European coalition helped by their regional allies. He however urged Syria to remain vigilant in the face of new plots by adversaries. Ayatollah Khamenei cited the US decision to carve out a buffer zone in Syria as one of the plots against the axis of resistance. The Leader described the war on Syria as a strategic flaw on the part of the enemies as they failed to notice the difference between Syria and other Arab countries. Ayatollah Khamenei further reaffirmed Iran’s continued support for Syria. He said the Islamic republic is proud of its backing for the Syrian government and people during the conflict. The Syrian president thanked Iran for its unlimited support for Syria. He also drew a parallel between the Syria conflict and Iraq’s imposed war on Iran. Assad said the myth that the US does decide the fate of other countries is crumbling due to Syria’s victory in the war.

US border wall dispute

The US House Speaker says it is necessary to block President Donald Trump’s declaration of national emergency to build a wall along the Mexican border. Pelosi said congress has to step up to defend its constitutional role. She said Trump’s emergency declaration violates the US constitution. Pelosi was speaking ahead of Tuesday’s congressional session to debate a resolution that aims to terminate Trump’s declaration. The resolution is expected to pass the House, but it is unclear whether the Republican-controlled Senate will support the move. Last week, the US president declared a national emergency after Congress refused to allocate funding to his border wall project. Trump has said he could redirect funding from other activities to build the border wall, drawing the ire of both Republicans and Democrats.

Pakistan-India conflict

Pakistan's army says Indian military aircraft crossed the line of control in the disputed Kashmir region and "released a payload". The Pakistani military says the incident caused no damage or casualties. Army Spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor says the Indian aircraft flew in from the Pakistan-controlled Muzafarabad area. India’s Defense Ministry says it has no information about Islamabad’s allegations. Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors are high since a car bomb attack by a Pakistan-based militant group in Indian-controlled Kashmir earlier this month. The attack killed 40 Indian paramilitary policemen. New Delhi has blamed Islamabad for the attack, but Pakistan has denied complicity.

Vatican sex scandal

Top Vatican cleric George Pell has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two choirboys. An Australian court found Pell guilty on one count of sexual abuse and four counts of indecent assault of two boys at a cathedral in Melbourne in the 1990s. This makes the cardinal the most senior Catholic cleric ever convicted of child sex crimes. Pell has denied the allegations, saying he intends to appeal the conviction. A pre-sentencing hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. The court verdict comes shortly after a landmark summit on clergy sex abuse in Rome. The summit, which was led by Pope Francis himself, concluded with several proposals to tackle the issue within the church.
