Is China’s South Sudan oil domination threatening US?

Oil companies in South Sudan

Oil companies may be complicit in atrocities in South Sudan. This is according to a UN Panel report which comes at a time where violence is gripping the country.

Over a dozen peacekeepers have already been killed in South Sudan, but China seems undeterred by the risks involved in investing in Africa – in contrast with the US.

China is one of the few world powers willing to take risks in the continent and it dominates oil-rich South Sudan having derived lucrative feats out of their risk-taking strategies, but this has come with the price of ignoring human rights violations and international law.  It is China's policy approach that likely underpins the Belt and Road Initiative, a project designed to expand China’s influence in the Global South.

Investigations by the UNHRC show Chinese companies and financing institutions have little concern about human rights violations regarding projects promoted and financed by them across different countries in Africa. The question is how long can violations be overlooked until they come back to bite?
