Heavy rains caused extensive flooding in parts of northern Peru on Monday.
Market traders in Aguas Verdes, a town in the Tumbes region close to the border with Ecuador, were picking up the pieces after last night’s rainfall caused a nearby irrigation canal to burst its banks.
Locals braved the knee high waters to purchase what produce remained.
At least 39 people were killed, 14 injured and more than 8,000 people affected by the latest flooding and mudslides nationwide, according to the National Institute for Civil Defence (Indeci).
The government has declared a state of emergency in the most-affected regions.
