Iran's First Vice President Es'haq Jahangiri has arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on a two-day visit to hold talks with senior officials of the Arab country.

Upon his arrival in Damascus International Airport on Monday, Jahangiri was welcomed by Syrian Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Mohammad Samer al-Khalil as well as Minister of Transport Ali Hammoud.

Iran's first vice president was then officially received by his Syrian counterpart, Imad Khamis, and the two officials inspected the guard of honor.

Jahangiri and Khamis then started negotiations on major regional and international developments and other issues of mutual interest.

Jahangiri plans to exchange views with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on different issues.

He will also attend a meeting of the two countries' high joint committee and participate in the signing ceremony of agreements for the expansion of bilateral cooperation.

A 40-member delegation, including businessmen of Iran's private sector and the governor of the Central Bank of Iran, Abdolnaser Hemmati, are accompanying the Iranian vice president in his visit to Syria.

Iran is a key ally of Syria. Tehran has been providing military advisory assistance to Damascus in its anti-terror fight.

Iranian officials have also voiced the Islamic Republic's readiness to help Syria with the reconstruction of the war-ravaged country.

In a meeting with Syrian President Assad in Damascus in August, Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami hailed the steadfastness of the Syrian people and government forces in their battle against terrorism, expressing confidence that they will achieve a final victory in this path.

"Not only regional people, but people around the world are indebted to the fight carried out against terrorists in Syria," Hatami said.
