Press TV anchor arrested

Press TV news anchor Marzieh Hashemi has been detained and imprisoned in the United States with no formal charges. Hashemi was arrested after arriving at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on Sunday. She has now been transferred to a Washington DC facility by the FBI. Hashemi has informed her family members of her ill-treatment in detention. A call to the FBI rang unanswered. The bureau also did not immediately respond to a written request for comment. US officials have so far refused to provide any reasons for the American-born anchor’s apprehension either to her or her family.

Iran’s foreign minister has criticized US police for detaining Marzieh Hashemi, a news presenter for Iranian English-language Press TV news network.

May survives

British Prime Minister Theresa May survives a no-confidence vote tabled by the opposition Labour Party. Lawmakers voted 325 to 306 that they have confidence in May’s government. After surviving the no-confidence motion, the premier said she has invited parliamentary party leaders to meet her to break the deadlock over Brexit. May added that she will continue to work on the withdrawal deal from the European Union.

Palestine UN membership

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says he plans to reactivate an application for the Palestinians to have full membership in the United Nations. The Palestinian foreign minister said the plan will likely happen in a few weeks. This was announced just before Abbas took over as head of a key group at the UN with a pledge to seek a solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
