US government shutdown

Protests and closures have spread across the United States, as the government shutdown enters twenty-second day, making it the longest in the country’s history. The record-long shutdown left 800,000 federal workers without paychecks on Friday. President Donald Trump has also refused to sign on budgets for swaths of government departments that are unrelated to the dispute, as he holds out for billions in new wall funding. In North Carolina, federal employees took to the streets, demonstrating against receiving blank pay statements. Miami airport also closed a terminal due to lack of employees, who refused to show up under the shutdown.

France protests

French police have clashed with demonstrators in the capital, Paris, in the ninth consecutive weekend of yellow vest protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s economic policies. Police used water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. They also arrested dozens of people before and during the protests in Paris. Similar demonstrations erupted in some other French cities, as well. Officials have vowed zero tolerance for violence. The protests started in mid-November as a simple protest against planned fuel hikes, but soon morphed into mass anti-government demonstrations.

Gaza funeral

Palestinians hold funeral for a woman killed by Israeli forces during Friday’s anti-occupation protests. The 43-year old victim, identified as Amal al-Taramsi, was shot in the head during the 42nd consecutive Friday of protests. Scores of protesters including medics and journalists were also injured by Israeli gunfire during the mass demonstration. Palestinians have staged demonstrations known as the Great March of Return rallies in Gaza since March 30th. They are calling for an end to Israel’s decades-long occupation of the Palestinian territories. Since the beginning of the protests, Israeli forces have killed more than 200 Palestinians and injured thousands more.

Yemen fighting

Clashes erupt between Ansarullah fighters and Saudi-backed forces in the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah. Artillery and machine-gun exchanges rocked the city early Saturday morning. The clashes come a month after a ceasefire agreement was reached between the Ansarullah movement and the representatives from the former Yemeni government in Sweden. The UN-brokered talks were held in an attempt to end the Saudi-led war on Yemen which has left over 15,000 people dead since early 2015. Hudaydah has been at the center of clashes between the warring sides due to its strategic location. It is the main port entry for food and humanitarian aid to nearly 16 million Yemenis.

Rohingya refugees plight

The Rohingya families living in Indian-controlled Kashmir have been gripped by constant fear. Amid a hate campaign marked by calls for their deportation, the refugees are worried and scared.
