Iran criticizes US role

The Iranian foreign minister says the US brings chaos, repression and resentment whenever and wherever it interferes. Mohammad Javad Zarif made the remark in a tweet in response to his US counterpart’s claim that “when America retreats, chaos follows.” Zarif said Iran will never follow the US human rights models. Earlier on Thursday, Mike Pompeo claimed the presence of his country in the Middle East is necessary for the stability of the region. The US secretary of state also encouraged regional countries to join the US in ramping up pressure on Iran. Pompeo is in Egypt as part of his Middle East tour.

US govt. shutdown

The US president visits the US-Mexico border along the state of Texas, as he is seeking to drum up support for his plan to build a wall at the frontier. Speaking in a meeting with border agents, Donald Trump argued that the border wall will prevent human trafficking and other violent crimes. Before his trip, the US president canceled a planned visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland due to government shutdown. Trump said his decision was due to what he called the Democrats’ intransigence on border security and the great importance of safety for the US.

Maduro new term

Nicolas Maduro has been sworn in for the second term as the president of Venezuela amid tensions with the international community. The inauguration ceremony took place before Venezuela's Supreme Court in the capital Caracas. During his inauguration speech, Maduro accused the US and its allies of conspiring against the country. Shortly after the ceremony, the Organization of American States voted to reject the legitimacy of Maduro’s second term in office. The European Union also condemned the Venezuelan president’s new term in office saying it was based on non-democratic elections. Maduro has rejected all allegations of vote-rigging.

Murder of Khashoggi

US Congress members and media personalities demand justice in the case of the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside his country's consulate in Turkey. Pelosi said Congress is committed to holding the perpetrators accountable. The remarks were made during an event at the Capitol to mark the one hundredth day since the killing of Khashoggi. The US-based journalist was an outspoken critic of the Saudi royal family. He disappeared inside the Saudi consulate in Turkey on October the 2nd. Prosecutors said Khashoggi was murdered by agents sent by the kingdom. But Riyadh has refused to take the blame, and instead accused an intelligence officer for ordering the murder. Saudi Arabia claims it has indicted eleven people over the killing with five of them likely to get death penalty.

US Iraq deployment

A significant number of US forces have been deployed to military bases in the Iraqi city of Kirkuk. Iraqis are critical of the deployment. They say there’s no need for the presence of US troops in Kirkuk. Our correspondent Kakalaw Abdulla has more.

Argentina protest

Thousands of people have marched in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, to protest the austerity program of President Mauricio Macri. The demonstrations are the first in a series of planned protests against soaring cost of public services and high inflation. The protesters are angry at a deal reached between the government and the International Monetary Fund for a 57-billion-dollar lifeline in exchange for cutting the deficit. Macri slashed government subsidies for public utilities to reduce the country’s chronic fiscal deficit. The unpopular move has pushed electricity and gas prices up more than 2,000 percent. Inflation has neared 50 percent and the country’s national currency has lost more than half of its value.
