22 arrested in UK police crackdown on drug traffickers

A total of 22 people have been arrested in a massive crackdown by the British police on drug traffickers operating in an area spanning from the capital London to northwest England.

Local media said on Wednesday that 10 people had been charged by the police after raids tackling the supply of illegal drugs to Cumbria.

The operation that began a day earlier mainly targeted drug dealers in Barrow-in-Furness, Coventry and London, said the reports, adding that people suspected of activity in a main drug trafficking line, from London to Barrow, had been arrested.

Police said the crackdown is part of the Operation Horizon, a larger drive to nab influential drug traffickers in northwest England, which has been in place since May.

The push comes amid a desperate attempt by UK authorities to contain growing violence on the streets which expert believe is fueled by drug business in the country. Hundreds were killed in stabbings or other forms of knife crime across Britain last year with many of them related to youth allegedly exploited in the drug trafficking network.

The number of people stabbed to death in London last year exceeded a 10-year-high of 154.  That prompted serious concerns among rights activists and politicians as many demanded urgent action from a government that has hardly accepted responsibility for the issue.

Critics of the government believe repeated cuts to police budget over the past years have rendered the force seriously understaffed, allowing drugs traffickers to grow their business in large cities.

The Cumbria Constabulary said Wednesday that thousands of pounds in cash and quantities of heroin and crack cocaine had been recovered from those arrested in the raid in the region.
