Philippines: Hundreds injured in Manila’s Black Nazarene procession
More than 600 people were left injured as hundreds of thousands of devotees attended the 'Traslacion' procession of the Black Nazarene in Manila on Wednesday.
Close to 800,000 worshippers attended this year's procession with many flinging themselves at the black statue of Jesus Christ for its believed healing powers. The statue is paraded through the city every year in one of the most-attended religious gatherings of the Catholic church.
After an eve of 'Pahalik' or kissing the statue's feet, the statue is symbolically transferred from the Quirino Grandstand to the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene or Parish of Saint John the Baptist in Quiapo, Manila, in a barefoot procession that takes all day commemorating 'Traslacion'.
A sea of devotees gather around the statue and try to touch the icon due to the belief that it has miraculous powers.
