Bolsonaro assumes presidential office in Brazil

Brazil's new nationalist president is a self-proclaimed admirer of the 1964 to 1985 military dictatorship.

Jair Bolsonaro has vowed to adhere to democratic norms, while freeing the country from socialism. He plans to form closer ties with US President Donald Trump. The two have exchanged kind words on Twitter. But this means shifting away from Brazil'’s traditional allies, the socialists and developing nations.

He has followed Trump's footsteps by pledging to relocate Brazil'’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds, a very controversial and provocative move. The Arab League has warned Bolsonaro this would lead to a setback in relations with Arab nations.
