2018: End Of The Year Review - part 2

In this edition of Economic Divide, the year in review of part 2, Asia, the Middle East and Africa will be reviewed.

In Saudi Arabia, analysts say the new crown prince is struggling to transform the kingdom’s economy. Mohammad Bin Salman’s vision 2030 focuses on privatization and less reliance on oil. Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen has not achieved any of its stated goals. Almost daily Saudi air strikes in 2018 have damaged much of the country’s infrastructure.

In May, the administration of US President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal. Trump claims the deal fails to address Iran’s influence in the region and its missile program. 2018 has seen more suffering for Palestinians, especially those living in the Gaza Strip.

The world bank says Gaza’s economy is collapsing because of a devastating decade long Israeli land, air and sea blockade. The two largest economies in the world, the US and China, have been locked in an escalating trade war. The US President has complained about what he claims is unfair Chinese trading practices.

The number of people living in extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa has continued to rise this year. According to forecasts by the World Bank, nearly nine in ten extremely poor people will live in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.
