White House: Pelosi's plan to reopen government 'a non-starter'

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says House Democrats' plan to bring an end to the 11-day government shutdown will fail.

"President Trump made a serious, good faith offer to Democrats to open the government, address the crisis at our border, and protect all Americans," Sanders said in a statement late Tuesday.

"We have heard nothing back from the Democrats, who so far have refused to compromise. Speaker Designate Nancy Pelosi released a plan that will not re-open the government because it fails to secure the border and puts the needs of other countries above the needs of our own citizens," she continued.

"The Pelosi plan is a non-starter because it does not fund our homeland security or keep American families safe from human trafficking, drugs, and crime,” she said.

Trump has invited top lawmakers from the US House of Representatives and the Senate to discuss the funding of his border wall. Funding for the wall has led to a budget impasse, causing the ongoing partial government shutdown.

Nancy Pelosi, the presumptive incoming House speaker, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have made plans to end the shutdown, with the House expected to pass their proposal just hours after the new Congress is sworn in.

The proposal is expected to keep the current border security funding level of $1.3 billion, which can be spent on fencing and border barrier repairs.

However, Trump has already rejected the proposal, saying in a tweet, “without a wall there can be no real border security.”
