US Senate to detail Russian election meddling: Report
The US Congress will publish a report this week detailing Russia’s alleged disinformation campaign surrounding the 2016 presidential election campaign, US media have reported.
The research is the first to study the millions of social media posts provided by major technology firms Twitter, Facebook and Google, which detail Russian efforts to help elect President Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.
The study was compiled for the Senate Intelligence Committee by researchers associated with Britain’s University of Oxford, the newspaper reported.
The research also provides details about the alleged efforts made by the Russian Internet Research Agency to sow discord among US voters by posting on contentious issues such as gun violence, immigration and race, according to the report.
It will be one of two reports the committee will release this week, the Post said.
“What is clear is that all of the messaging clearly sought to benefit the Republican Party — and specifically Donald Trump,” the report said.
“Trump is mentioned most in campaigns targeting conservatives and right-wing voters, where the messaging encouraged these groups to support his campaign. The main groups that could challenge Trump were then provided messaging that sought to confuse, distract and ultimately discourage members from voting,” it added.
US Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the alleged Russian interference in the last US presidential election.
Russia has denied interfering in the elections. Trump has also repeatedly dismissed accusations of any collusion with Moscow and has called for an end to the federal probe.
The Post reported last week that Russian citizens made contact with at least 14 Trump associates during his 18-month election campaign and presidential transition period.
The Russian citizens also made contact with Trump's closest family and friends, as well as figures on the periphery of his orbit, the newspaper said, citing public records and interviews.
Court documents filed in the past month by Mueller’s office reveal that the Russian outreach to Trump’s former associates and family members was more extensive than previously known.
