Review of US policy towards S Arabia is political: analyst

J. Michael Springman

The United States House Foreign Affairs Committee's plan to conduct a review of US policy towards Saudi Arabia is "more political than actual concern about American foreign policy", according to a former US diplomat.

"It is interesting that the incoming chairman of the United States House Foreign Affairs Committee has planned to conduct a thorough review US policy towards Saudi Arabia, including ties between senior White House adviser Jared Kushner and Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, says former US diplomat J. Michael Springman.

Springman told Press TV in an interview on Tuesday that it was also interesting that the move takes place at a time when the House of Representatives is changing hands with a democratic majority.

"I wonder where Eliot Engel, the man who is going to conduct the investigation, was in the last few months after the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, plus all the other people who have been jailed or kidnapped from foreign countries like the United Arab Emirates by the Saudis," Springman asks himself.

Springman believes that waiting till after Christmas recess for launching the probe shows that the top-to-bottom review of US policy towards Saudi Arabia is actually more political than an actual concern about the US foreign policy and which direction it was going.

He said the real important US foreign policies that Engel should be tackling were about the Americans role in the Saudi aggression in Yemen, the Israeli killing of Palestinian, and the push for war with Iran.

Springman signed off expressing hope that Engel conducts a real review of US foreign policy and does not “play politics”.
