Brexit vote delay

The European Council President calls a summit of bloc leaders to discuss Brexit but warns there would be no re-negotiation on the UK’s exit deal. Donald Toosk said the leaders will not talk about a revision of the terms of the deal, including the issue of the Irish border known as the backstop. He, however, said the meeting will help the UK smooth out the ratification of the departure deal. The head of the European Council said Brussels is also preparing itself for a no-deal scenario as the time is running out for Brexit. Toosk’s comments came after British Prime Minister, Theresa May deferred a parliamentary vote that was set for Tuesday on her Brexit deal with the EU.

France protests

The French President has pledged to cut taxes for pensioners and raise the minimum wage next month, following weeks of violent protests across the country. Emmanuel Macron said France is in a state of economic emergency, adding that his government will respond by cutting taxes and controlling spending. He said the government wants a France where people can live with dignity on their income. However, Macron refused to reinforce the so-called “wealth tax” and pledged to push ahead with his reforms. Earlier, students caused disruptions in some 120 schools across France to protest against the government’s education reforms. The developments come after four weekends of so-called “yellow vest” protests that started over fuel price hikes and morphed into violent rallies against Macron’s economic policies.

Israeli raid in West Bank

Clashes have erupted between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters as the regime forces raided the offices of the Palestinian news agency, Wafa in the occupied West Bank. Several Palestinians were injured during the violent encounter in Ramallah. Israeli troops stormed Wafa news agency’s server room and combed the camera recording equipment. Israeli forces attacked several Palestinian villages as well. The raids were reportedly part of a hunt for men allegedly involved in a shooting in an Israeli settlement which wounded several Jewish settlers.

Yemen peace talks

The United Nations special envoy for Yemen has expressed hope to secure agreements on various issues as Yemen’s warring sides continue their talks in Sweden. Yemen’s Ansarullah movement and Saudi-backed delegations have been engaged in peace talks in Stockholm since Thursday, but have not yet reached tangible results. Press TV's Robert Carter has more.

Deadly attack in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, at least four people are killed and six wounded in an attack outside the capital, Kabul. Security sources say it was a suicide attack on an operational team from the National Directorate for Security. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, yet. Afghanistan has been struck by numerous attacks and bombings recently. The Taliban have claimed many of the strikes. Afghanistan still faces insecurity 17 years after the United States and its allies invaded the country as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
