Riyadh hosts GCC summit as rifts with Qatar remain

Leaders of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council or the GCC met in Riyadh on Sunday to discuss regional issues. But an important point about this year’s summit was an invitation by Saudi Arabia to Qatar.

The same fellow Arab nation it has put under an economic blockade since June last year over charges that it supports terrorism. There is still little hope that differences would be solved between Doha and the quartet anytime soon. But what led the Saudis to think of inviting Qatar to the summit and what does it show?
