Paris climate deal 'isn't working out' for France, Trump claims

US President Donald Trump has lashed out against the Paris Climate Agreement, claiming French citizens have held demonstrations because they don’t want to pay “large sums of money, much to third world countries.”

“The Paris Agreement isn’t working out so well for Paris. Protests and riots all over France,” Trump tweeted on Saturday morning. “People do not want to pay large sums of money, much to third world countries (that are questionably run), in order to maybe protect the environment.”

Trump, who has called climate change a Chinese “hoax,” last year abandoned the Paris Climate Agreement, which calls for holding the ongoing rise in global average temperature to “well below 2 °C above preindustrial levels,” while “pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C.”

During his election campaign, Trump had said he would "cancel" the accord in his first 100 days as president in order to save the declining coal industry in the US.

He called the deal unfair to American workers and said it stifled production and imposed burdens on the country.

The Paris Agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016 and has been signed by 197 countries, of which 135 have now formally ratified it, which represent more than 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Last week, Trump again expressed his doubts about climate change, using the especially cold Thanksgiving forecast as an example.

"Brutal and Extended Cold Blast could shatter ALL RECORDS - Whatever happened to Global Warming?" the president tweeted.

A new climate change report by the US government directly contradicts much of the Trump administration’s policy on the phenomenon.

Last month, Trump rejected his own government's report warning of massive economic losses and human casualties if carbon emissions continue to feed climate change unchecked.

This while hundreds of US cities, states, businesses and churches have set up a camp at the UN climate talks in Poland in an effort to show that many people in the United States remain committed to curbing global warming despite Trump’s stance.

The symbolic move took place Friday during the opening of the US Climate Action Center alongside pavilions from Britain, Poland and New Zealand, The Associated Press reported.

‘We Want Trump!’

On his Twitter on Saturday, Trump also once again claimed that protesters in France were “chanting ‘We Want Trump!’”

Trump made the same claim on Tuesday. He shared a tweet claiming French protesters chanted. "We want Trump.”  The original tweet came from Turning Point USA's Charlie Kirk, and said the protests in France over a proposed hike in fuel taxes showed the success of Trump's administration.
