Saudi and Emirati blackmail of the UN

Violence and civilian suffering in Yemen especially in the key port city of Hudaydah will probably go on for now. This week, the United States and some other members of the United Nations Security Council blocked a resolution calling for a truce and the resumption of humanitarian aid deliveries in Yemen. The move came following an intense lobbying campaign by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to prevent the passage of the resolution. This has led many observers to believe that the two Arab states still hope to make military gains in their push to seize Hudaydah from popular forces defending the city. Saudi Arabia and its allies are apparently seeking to gain the upper hand in the decisive battle before the start of planned peace talks in Stockholm in December.
