US President Donald Trump is denying reports that he is unhappy with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Trump slammed a Friday report by The Wall Street Journal about his open dissatisfaction as “fake news.”

"I am extremely happy and proud of the job being done by [Mnuchin]," Trump tweeted. "The FAKE NEWS likes to write stories to the contrary, quoting phony sources or jealous people, but they aren’t true. They never like to ask me for a quote b/c it would kill their story."

Since the 2016 campaign, Trump has repeatedly used the term "fake news" largely for any coverage criticizing him or his allies.

Quoting several unnamed sources, the report alleged that Trump had derided Mnuchin behind his back.

The US president was reportedly outraged at the recent volatility in the market, asking, “If he’s so good, why is this happening?”

Trump's spokeswoman, Lindsay Walters, was also cited as saying Trump "appreciates" the secretary's work.

The White House echoed the same idea in a statement released later.

“President Trump appreciates Secretary Mnuchin’s service as a key member of his cabinet and reports suggesting otherwise are false," said the statement.

Trump is reportedly looking to replace chief of staff John Kelly, Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, among others.

Ever since Trump assumed office, his administration has been battered by numerous dismissals and resignations, making layoffs an everyday reality at the White House under a New York businessman.
