Iran’s fight against terrorism

Iran has reiterated its readiness to take part in the fight against terrorism alongside European countries. Iran’s Foreign Ministry officials made the remarks in a meeting with Norway and Sweden ambassadors as well as the chargé d'affaires of Denmark’s embassy in Tehran. Earlier, Iran strongly protested to Norway, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands over the September terrorist attack in the Iranian city of Ahvaz. Foreign Ministry officials rejected as unacceptable that the European counties harbor those who claimed the deadly attack. The meeting came amid a standoff between Tehran and Copenhagen over claims that Iran had tried to carry out an assassination plot on Danish soil, a charge Tehran strongly denies. Iran says the claim is part of a false-flag operation by the Israeli spy agency.

Brutal bombings of Yemen

Yemeni forces have conducted major counter-attacks against the Saudi-led forces near the port city of Hudaydah amid an all-out Saudi offensive. The Saudi-led forces launched a ground assault, backed by airstrikes, to seize Yemen’s strategic Red Sea port. Reports say Saudi warplanes carried out over 80 airstrikes on Hudaydah in only a day. A Yemeni armed forces spokesman said the army thwarted enemy’s attempts to penetrate the defenses in Hudaydah. The counterattacks killed dozens of Saudi-backed forces. Earlier this week, the Saudis deployed some ten-thousand troops as part of efforts to capture Hudaydah, the main entry point for vital aid in the war-torn country. The Saudi war has killed nearly 15,000 Yemenis, most of them civilians, since 2015.

US drills with South Korea

The United States and South Korea are set to kick off military drills on Monday days ahead of high-level denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyongyang. South Korea's Ministry of Defense has confirmed training would begin near the southern city of Pohang. The country’s media say about 500 American and South Korean marines will participate in the small-scale maneuvers. Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he will meet with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong-chol, later this week. Pompeo says substantial steps toward denuclearization are expected. On Friday, Pyongyang threatened to resume its nuclear program if Washington continues its campaign of pressure and sanctions.

Appeal for Khashoggi’s body

Sons of murdered Saudi Journalist Jamal Khashoggi appeal for the return of their father’s body so they can give him a proper burial. Khashoggi’s sons said without their father’s body the family is unable to accept his death and grieve. Khashoggi, an outspoken critic of Riyadh, entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey on October the second and never came out. His disappearance sparked massive criticism from media and the international community. Saudi Arabia finally admitted that the journalist was killed in the consulate in a premeditated action, revising previous statements that his death was unintentional.

Trump's campaign rally

The US president warns about migrants’ invasion as he rallies for the Republican camp in the run-up to the country’s midterm elections. Donald Trump made the remarks in Macon, Georgia, where he campaigned with Brian Kemp, who is in a tight race with Democrat Stacey Abrams for the governor's office. Republicans have been benefiting from the country’s economic growth in the past two years. But Trump has been particularly focusing on what he calls the security threat from migrants seeking to enter the nation through Mexico. Meanwhile, Democrats insist that only they will protect the healthcare gains made under former president Barack Obama. They also slam Trump’s divisive policies and accuse him of using inhumane measures to keep migrants out.

Chinese president pledge

Chinese President, Xi Jinping, pledges to open up his country’s market for more imports and work towards lowering tariffs. Xi was speaking at the opening ceremony of China International Import Expo in the city of Shanghai. He said Beijing would step up efforts to ease customs clearance procedures and rein in intellectual property violations. In an indirect jab at US President Donald Trump’s policies, the Chinese leader spoke out against protectionism, isolationism and confrontation. He said some should not blame others while doing nothing to address their own weaknesses. Beijing has been engaged in a tariff war with the United States after Trump imposed levies on Chinese imports.

US Iran sanctions

The United States has re-imposed sanctions on Iran, which were lifted under the 2015 international nuclear agreement. Washington’s move targets Iran’s oil exports, shipping and banks. US president Donald Trump has described the sanctions as the strongest ever against Iran. They took effect six months after he withdrew from the nuclear accord known as the JCPOA. Trump said the deal was a very bad one and had failed to stop what he called Iran’s wrong behavior. Tehran strongly dismisses Trump’s allegations. It says the US withdrawal and the re-imposition of sanctions show that Washington can’t be trusted. Other signatories to the JCPOA have all opposed the US move. They stress that they will do all they can to preserve the accord.

‘Iran will defeat sanctions’

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has slammed the restoration of US sanctions, pledging that Tehran will defeat them. Rouhani said the US sanctions are targeting the Iranian people and not the government. He said Washington is now more isolated than ever, noting that European governments and companies are furious at US policies. Rouhani also pointed out that most countries support the Iran nuclear deal and are against the US withdrawal. The Iranian president also called for unity among the Iranian people and vowed that the nation will never be weakened in the face of US sanctions.
