A 15-year-old boy in the US state of Florida has been charged with killing his mother following an argument over a poor school grade, local law-enforcement officials said.

“There was a D in one of the subjects is what the story is, and mom was furious at him,” said Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood as quoted by a local Fox News TV station on Saturday.

According to the sheriff, the young teenager -- identified as Gregory Ramos – confessed to strangling his 46-year-old mother, Gail Cleavenger, after the argument late Thursday.

Chitwood further stated that the boy admitted killing his mother while she was asleep and no one else was at home. His father was away on a business trip.

He added that authorities began investigating the case Friday afternoon, after Ramos reported to police that his house had been burglarized by intruders who stole computers, a Playstation 4, a rifle and other items, further noting that his mom was also missing.

"He went to school, left school early, which is where his story began to fall apart," Chitwood pointed out, explaining that Ramos eventually confessed to detectives that he staged the burglary with assistance from two 17-year-old classmates, who were also taken into custody by police.

According to local news reports, the teenager used a wheelbarrow to load his mother’s body into her van and then drove it to a church, where he buried the body beneath a fire pit.

The sheriff further described the case as one of the most disturbing and saddest, emphasizing: “I have a feeling this is a case we'll be hearing about for years to come.”
