Africa’s longest border at risk by Angola’s ‘violent’ expulsions

The Democratic Republic of Congo has threatened to take international action over recent allegations that Angola has expelled over 300,000 illegal migrants.

Some 30,000 of these are reported to have been brutally kicked out of the country, and some have been killed. Angola responded that they targeted foreign nationals suspected of diamond smuggling. Africa Today asks how these latest allegations could affect the relations between the two neighbours. Angola, the world’s fifth largest diamond producer, has launched an operation in recent weeks to clear tens of thousands of people involved in digging for precious stones. Many Congolese have described being brutally thrown out of Angola after sometimes living there for more than 10 years. Migrants who crossed back to the frontier town of Kamako said that their houses were burnt by police and gangs of Angolan youths, and some were attacked with machetes and beaten as they fled. The likelihood of a temporary crisis is high as migrants forced to return to Congo face limited access to food, water and shelter.
