Russia-US tensions

Russia has slammed Washington’s decision to pull out of a landmark nuclear weapons treaty with Moscow, calling it a dangerous step. Deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said the move will spark international outcry. Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the US dreams of a “unipolar world” by leaving the accord. US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal, accusing Russia of violating the 1987 pact. The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty banned ground-launched medium-range missiles. Trump also criticized his predecessor Barack Obama for remaining in the deal after Russia allegedly tested a ground-launched cruise missile four years ago.

Khashoggi murder

Skepticism is growing worldwide over Saudi Arabia’s account of how dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed in the Kingdom’s consulate in Turkey. Canada, Australia and New Zealand are the latest countries to join a chorus of criticism against Saudi Arabia. Canada says the Saudi explanation of Khashoggi’s murder lacks consistency and credibility. Australia has rejected the explanation too, while New Zealand has said that it will not attend an upcoming investment summit in the Kingdom. Turkey, European leaders and rights groups have also questioned the Saudi account that Khashoggi died in a fistfight. In the US, President Donald Trump first accepted the Saudi explanation as credible, but later said he’s NOT satisfied with it. Trump, however, added that he prefers to keep his country’s arms sales with Riyadh.

Israel demolition policy

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his decision to delay the demolition of a Bedouin village in the West Bank is not indefinite. The Israeli High Court has ruled that the village and its only school would be demolished. The court had set October 1 as the final deadline for the residents to leave the village. The decision to demolish Khan al-Ahmar has drawn the world's attention. The United Nations expressed deep concerns about the plan, saying it contradicts international law. Rights advocates also say that a forcible transfer of the residents would violate international law regarding occupied territories and amounted to war crime.

Yemen civilians killed

Saudi Arabia’s unabated bombardment of Yemen continues to claim lives. In the latest episode, Saudi airstrikes hit a vehicle in the city of Ads in the northwestern Hajjah province. The attack left four civilians dead and another wounded. Saudi Arabia has intensified the aggression on its southern neighbor. Last week, 19 civilians, including women and children, were killed as Saudi jets battered Hudaydah province. Riyadh began the war on Yemen in March 2015. Since then, over 15,000 Yemenis, most of them civilians, have been killed.

Brazil rally

Thousands of people take to the streets in Brazil to protest the candidacy of presidential front-runner Jair Bolsonaro. The right-wing candidate is facing an intense opposition ahead of the country’s general election. He has provoked controversy for a series of comments implying misogyny and racism. The protestors say what Bolsonaro represents poses a threat to Brazilian democracy. The far-right candidate has won the first round of the presidential election with 46 percent of the votes. Since then, however, he has become the subject of a series of protests across the country and abroad. Bolsonaro will compete against left-wing candidate Fernando Haddad in the run-off vote scheduled for October 28.

US-bound migrants

Thousands of US-bound Central American migrants have illegally entered Mexico after being blocked along the Mexico-Guatemala border for one day. The caravan of thousands of migrants, most of them Hondurans, resumed their march and crossed over a river that separates Guatemala from Mexico. The migrants, including women and children, were stranded on a bridge because Mexico prevented them from entering its territory illegally. The presidents of Guatemala and Honduras are set to meet to discuss the issue. US President Donald Trump has threatened to use force against the migrants to block them from entering the US.
