US starts direct peace talks with Taliban The United States has reportedly held direct talks with the Taliban militants in search for ways to bring stability to Afghanistan.

The initiative is led by Zalmay Khalilzad, America's special envoy for Afghanistan. And it is seen as a key theme of Washington's desperate struggles to find possible paths to end the 17-year-old war in Afghanistan.

But what has pushed the US to approach the same group that it targeted in 2001 because it had harbored al-Qaeda terrorists?
