Iran slams US policy

Iran’s envoy to the United Nations says Washington’s coercive measures against other countries amount to collective punishment and violate human rights.  Gholamali Khoshroo slammed the US sanctions against Iran as illegal, adding that they are an example of Washington’s coercive measures. He said the US is addicted to using threats as a foreign policy tool. The Iranian diplomat added that such an approach weakens the UN, undermines its legitimacy and violates its charter. Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and re-imposed sanctions on Tehran. Washington has threatened to impose sanctions on countries that continue trading with Iran.

Saudi critic case

The Turkish Attorney General's office reportedly says evidence supports suspicions that the dissident Saudi journalist was killed in the Kingdom’s consulate-general in Istanbul. The Attorney General's office says the evidence of tampering has been found inside the Saudi diplomatic mission. Turkish police are also reportedly in possession of an audio recording, which allegedly indicates that Jamal Khashoggi was murdered at the Saudi consulate. Police and other officials are in Saudi Arabia's consulate-general as part of an investigation into the disappearance of Khashoggi. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump says he has talked to the Saudi king and that Riyadh denies any involvement in the disappearance of Khashoggi.

Worst famine in Yemen

The United Nations says Yemen will be facing the world’s worst famine in 100 years if Saudi Arabia continues to pound the impoverished nation. The UN humanitarian coordinator for Yemen said up to thirteen million civilians will be at risk of starvation. Lise Grande’s comments came after the UN and humanitarian workers condemned a Saudi airstrike on the port city of Hudaydah that claimed the lives of nearly twenty civilians on Saturday. Many children were among the dead. The Saudi regime has been bombing Yemen unabatedly since March 2015. The onslaught has killed nearly 15,000 Yemenis and caused the world’s worst current humanitarian crisis.

Iran defends multilateralism

Iran’s deputy ambassador to the UN calls for defending multilateralism following the illegal US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Es-hagh Al Habib was addressing the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on all disarmament and international security agenda items. He said systemic attempts are being made by some to undermine the value, significance and efficacy of multilateralism and to demonize multilateral institutions and agreements. Al Habib described multilateralism as the foundation of the rule-based international system. The Iranian diplomat called for nuclear disarmament of Israel, describing the regime's nuclear arsenal as an existential threat to the Middle East region.

Israeli crimes

Dozens of Palestinians have been injured by Israeli forces during yet another anti-occupation rally in the Gaza Strip. Israeli soldiers fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the protesters along the beach near the so-called buffer zone. According to Gaza's Health Ministry thirty-two Palestinians were wounded by Israeli fire. The protest was part of the Great Return March rallies. The demonstrations began on March 30 to denounce Israeli atrocities and the occupation of Palestinians land. The protesters want their right of return to their homeland to be guaranteed. Over two hundred Palestinians have been killed in the rallies so far. Israel has been criticized by rights groups over its deadly crackdown on peaceful protesters.

Saudi report on missing journo

Saudi Arabia is reportedly preparing a report that will acknowledge Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s death was the result of an interrogation that gone wrong. A source familiar with the case told US media the report will conclude that the operation was carried out without clearance and transparency. The source said Riyadh will announce that it will hold responsible those involved. The shifting story line is in defiance of earlier details that have emerged in the case, including signs that he was murdered and dismembered. US President, Donald Trump, has said he thinks rogue killers might have been behind the alleged murder. Khashoggi’s family has called for an independent and international probe into his disappearance.

Protest in Peru

In Peru, supporters of opposition leader Keiko Fujimori have taken to the streets of the capital Lima, demanding her release. The demonstrators chanted Keiko is innocent as they marched through downtown Lima. A number of Fujimori’s top political strategists were arrested at the demonstration. The protesters are also in support of her father, former president Alberto Fujimori, who had his pardon for crimes against humanity revoked by the Supreme Court in October. People from across the nation attended the march.
