NHL: Washington Capitals 5-2 Vegas Golden Knight

Defending champions the Washington Capitals have stunned the Vegas Golden Knight 5-2 at the Capital One Arena.

The Capitals took the lead as Evgeny Kuznetsov netted the puck with a few seconds remaining in the first period. Alexander Ovechkin doubled the lead for the hosts in the middle of the second frame, but a few seconds later, Cody Eakin cut the deficit for the Golden Knights.

Nicklas Backstrom scored the third for the Capitals in the final frame, which was followed by a goal from Reilly Smith. Then, two more goals in the same period secured the 5-2 victory for the Capitals.

The Washington Capitals will travel to New Jersey to play against the Devils next.
