Shanghai Open: Roger Federer defeats Daniil Medvedev

Defending champion Roger Federer has battled past Daniil Medvedev 2 sets to 1 to reach the last 16 at Shanghai Masters.

The Swiss Maestro was keen on taking advantage by playing some rapid tennis, and won the 1st set 6-4. But, as the match progressed, the Russian regained his composure and managed to win the 2nd set 6-4 to force a decider, where the 20-time grand-slam winner finished it again 6-4 "to serve-out the match" in just under 2 hours, keeping hopes of a 3rd Shanghai title alive. Federer will next face Roberto Bautista Agut.

That’s while, Juan Martin del Potro also progressed to the 3rd round of the Shanghai Masters after defeating Richard Gasquet in straight sets.

The Argentine faced a good performance by Gasquet, but managed to win the 1st set 7-5. The intense battle continued in the 2nd, but it was Del Potro who succeeded again, this time at 7-6 to wrap-up the match in an hour and 53 minutes. The Argentine will next face Croatia's Borna Coric.
