Japan Open: Shapovalov beats Wawrinka 2-1

Canada's Denis Shapovalov has fought back from a set down to defeat Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka 2-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the Japan Open.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka started strongly and claimed the first set 6-4, without facing a break-point.

But the Canadian, responded back and took the second set 6-1 to force a decider, which was closely-fought until Shapovalov won it 6-4 and secured his victory in an hour and 49 minutes.

Shapovalov will face either Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff or France's Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinals.
