California's governor inks tougher gun control bills into law
The Democrat Governor of California, Jerry Brown, has signed several new gun control laws in the state.
The new laws, signed on Friday, include one measure that increases the minimum age for buying rifles and shotguns in California from 18 to 21.
Other measures in the gun control laws signed by Governor Brown included a ban of firearm possession for people convicted of serious domestic violence charges, along with people who have been hospitalized for mental health problems more than once in one year. The new California gun laws will go into effect on January 1, 2019.
State Senator Anthony Portantino, the Democrat lawmaker behind the legislation, said recent mass shootings at high schools, in particular the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, had prompted him to pursue tougher laws.
Portantino said in a statement that, “No parent should have to worry that a gun gets in the wrong hands and commits a heinous and violent tragedy on our school campuses.”
Earlier this year, the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida left 14 students and three adults killed.
The US ranks 1st in the world in terms of per-capita gun ownership. Statistics from the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey published by media in 2016, showed there were 112 guns per 100 citizens in the US. This makes the US the only country in the world where there are more guns than citizens.
Republican politicians, backed by arms dealers/manufacturers as well as the National Rifle Association (NRA), support gun rights while the majority of the Americans support tougher control on guns.
