Iran national mourning

Iranians have held funeral ceremonies for the victims of Saturday’s terror attack in the southwestern city of Ahvaz. Thousands of mourners bid farewell to 25 people killed in the attack. Monday was also declared a day of national mourning in Iran. The attack targeted a military parade held as part of nationwide events to mark the 38th anniversary of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran. Civilian spectators, including a kid, were among those killed. Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has promised a crushing and devastating response to perpetrators.

Russia Syria missiles sale

The Russian defense minister says Moscow will supply an S-300 anti-missile system to Syria to boost the Arab country’s air defense capability. Sergei Shoigu said the decision made by President Vladimir Putin is one of the “response measures” following the downing of a Russian military plane in Syria. The Kremlin added that the missile system is also aimed at increasing the safety of the Russian military in Syria. The move comes a day after Moscow blamed Israel for the recent downing of its military plane that killed 15 servicemen on board. It said Israel gave misinformation to the plane, preventing it from moving timely to a safe area. Russia also accused the Israeli military of using the Russian aircraft as a shield against anti-aircraft missiles from the Syrian air defense force. Israel says it bears NO responsibility, and has blamed Syria for the incident.

Oil prices hike

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC has decided to keep its current production output, despite US pressures. Oil ministers of OPEC and non-member producing countries made the decision during a summit in Algeria. A Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee expressed its satisfaction regarding the current oil market outlook. The committee described the overall global balance between supply and demand as healthy. It also presented options for 2019 production levels to prevent market imbalance. Oil markets reacted quickly to the decision with prices jumping over 2 percent to a four-year high. US President Donald Trump had threatened the OPEC to push for lower prices by an immediate hike in output. Trump is pushing Washington’s oil producing allies to compensate price rise in the face of upcoming US sanctions on Iran’s oil export.

Ahvaz terror attack

Iran’s Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei condemns Saturday’s terrorist attack in the city of Ahvaz as a cowardly act. Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting with Iranian athletes who won medals in the Asian Games in Indonesia. Iran’s Leader noted that the incident once again showed that the Iranian nation has many enemies. The terrorist attack in Ahvaz left 25 people dead including a four-year-old child.

EU-Poland judicial row

The European Union is to take Poland to the bloc's top court for allegedly violating the independence of the Polish Supreme Court. The European Commission is critical of Poland's decision to lower the retirement age at the top court. The Commission claims the decision is incompatible with the EU law. However, the Polish government insists the changes are needed to tackle corruption. It says the judicial system is still haunted by the communist era and needs an overhaul. The EU has for more than two years been in talks with Warsaw about a number of judicial reforms that the bloc says threaten the rule of law in Poland.
