Rouhani in New York

Iran’s president says he will highlight the US government’s disregard for international laws as he arrives in New York to take part in the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. Hassan Rouhani will address the assembly on Tuesday. He will hold talks with some of the world leaders who have come to New York. The Iranian president will also meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. This year’s general assembly comes amid a global uproar over US President Donald Trump’s withdrawal from a number of international agreements including the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Palestinian talks with Israel halted

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says indirect cease-fire talks with Israel are halted. Abu Zuhri blamed Israel for the halt in negotiations, and said Israel was using the Palestinian Authority and Egypt as excuses. Abu Zuhri said in response to the halt, Hamas will escalate its protests in new locations along Gaza Strip's borders. Palestinians have been holding anti-Israel rallies in Gaza for months. Egypt and the United Nations have been working to mediate to avoid another large-scale round of violence between Israel and Gaza.

Egypt sentence

An Egyptian court has sentenced Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie to life in prison over a deadly attack on a police station back in 2013. The verdict was passed at a retrial in the southern province of Minya. 183 people had received death sentences, before a retrial was ordered. Nearly 700 people were tried again in this case over the weekend, 288 of whom were acquitted and 66 including Badie were sentenced to life imprisonment. Six of the remaining defendants have died and the rest were sentenced to up to 15 years in jail. Badie is accused of inciting deadly violence following the 2013 military coup against former president Mohamed Morsi.

Iran national mourning

Iranians are to hold a funeral for the victims of Saturday’s terror attack in the city of Ahvaz. People will bid farewell to over two dozen of their compatriots. Monday has been declared a day of national mourning in Iran. The September 22 attack came on the venue of a military parade held on the anniversary of the 1980 Iraqi war on Iran. Civilian spectators, including a four-year-old boy, were among the victims. Iran has blamed the attack on the US and its regional allies. The country’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps has pledged a deadly and unforgettable revenge against the terrorists and their backers.

US-China trade war

Asian markets slide on Monday as a trade war escalates between China and the United States. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.7 per cent in early trade. This while, financial markets in major Asian centers such as Japan, China and South Korea were closed for public holidays. The slip in markets comes after China called off trade discussions with the United States planned for this week. The two countries also impose new tariffs on each other’s goods. US tariffs on 200-billion dollars worth of Chinese goods and retaliatory tariffs by Beijing on 60-billion dollars of American products have taken effect on Monday.

‘Stop arming Saudis’

Leader of Britain’s Labour party Jeremy Corbyn has called on the government to end arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Corbyn was referring to the ongoing Saudi-led war on Yemen. He made the remarks at a meeting of the Labour party’s annual conference in Liverpool. The UK has come under strong criticism along with the US as one of the main suppliers of weaponry used by Saudi Arabia in the killing of civilians in Yemen.

OPEC output

Iran's oil minister has welcomed the decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to keep its current production output, despite US pressures. Bijan Zanganeh said the US seeks to reduce Iranian oil exports to zero, but that American dream would not materialize. Oil ministers of OPEC and non-member producing countries made the decision on Sunday during a summit in Algeria. Following the meeting, a Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee expressed its satisfaction regarding the current oil market outlook. The committee also presented options for 2019 production levels to prevent market imbalance. US president Donald Trump had threatened the OPEC to push for lower prices by an immediate hike in output. Trump is pushing Washington’s oil producing allies to compensate price rise in the face of upcoming US sanctions on Iran’s oil export.
