Anak Krakatau, an Indonesian volcano known for its deadly 1883 eruption, showed off a dramatic night eruption on Saturday.

Anak Krakatau, or known as the 'Child of Krakatau', has erupted at least 44 times this week, the country's Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency said.

Reuters aboard the Japanese helicopter carrier JS Kaga encountered the volcano after the ship's departure from Jakarta.

The volcano has been active since June but not caused any disruptions. No airport closure and tourism on neighbouring Krakatau volcano remains normal.

Lying on the Sunda Straits between Java and Sumatra islands, Krakatau claimed more than 35,000 lives in a deadly eruption in 1883. The highly active Anak Krakatau, is a new island formed by underwater eruption in 1927.
