Israeli atomic threat

Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations calls on the international community to adopt a strong stance against Israel’s atomic threat. In a letter to the UN, the Iranian mission said Israel’s nuclear arsenal is the biggest threat to global peace and security. The letter urged the UN to compel Israel to join the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and put its nuclear program under the IAEA’s supervision. It also demanded that the UN condemn Israel for threatening Iran with atomic annihilation. Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to destroy Iran as he visited the Dimona nuclear arms facility. Israel is believed to be the only possessor of nuclear weapons in the Middle East. Tel Aviv is believed to have hundreds of nuclear warheads.

Israeli aggression

A Palestinian teenager has been killed after Israeli soldiers opened fire during clashes near the fence separating the besieged Gaza Strip from the occupied territories. Gaza Health Ministry announced that 15-year-old Mumin Abu Ayeda was shot along the heavily-guarded area east of Rafah city in southern Gaza. It said he was part of anti-occupation protests, dubbed the Great March of Return, which have taken place in the past months. Scores of Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza since the protests began on March 30.

Germany-Saudi Arabia arms deal

New evidence shows Germany approved a delivery of weapons to Saudi Arabia despite an announcement in March that it would stop arms exports to countries involved in Yemen war. The official documents by the German government reveal that Berlin has approved selling a consignment of four artillery positioning systems to Riyadh. The vehicle-mounted systems can enable counterstrikes. Germany’s weapons sale to Saudi Arabia totaled almost 450 million euros in the third quarter of 2017. The revelation comes as Amnesty International said on Monday that countries supplying arms to the Saudi-led coalition are complicit in its war crimes in Yemen.

Mourning in Muharram

Muslims around the world are commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, Prophet Muhammad’s grandson. In Iran, millions gathered at mosques and on the streets to mark the event. The Thursday ceremonies mark Ashura. That’s the tenth day on the lunar month of Muharram. It is the peak of the ceremonies and marks the martyrdom day of Imam Hussein. The third Shia Imam and 72 of his companions were martyred in 680 AD after they refused to pledge allegiance to the then tyrant Yazid.

Kavanaugh's misconduct case

US President Donald Trump says it’s time for the woman who’s accused his Supreme Court nominee of sexually assaulting her to testify in a Senate hearing. Christine Blasey Ford had initially said she would testify. She now says she wants the FBI to investigate Judge Brett Kavanaugh instead of testifying. Republican leaders have ruled out her request. Ford alleges that Kavanaugh abused her when she was fifteen and he was seventeen. Kavanaugh denies the allegations and will testify at a Senate hearing on Monday. The scandal comes at a time when the Senate Judiciary Committee is preparing to vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination by President Donald Trump to the country’s highest court to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
