Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has pardoned or reduced the prison terms of 615 Iranian prisoners convicted by various courts.

The Leader granted the clemency on the occasion of Eid al-Adha (the Feast of Sacrifice) and Eid al-Ghadeer upon a request by the country’s Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani.

The 615 prisoners had been found guilty in public and Islamic Revolution courts, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.

The Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or commute the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the Judiciary chief.

The 10th day of the lunar Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah marks the Eid al-Adha, which is celebrated at the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

The Eid al-Ghadeer, which marks the occasion of the appointment by Islam’s Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon Him) of Imam Ali (Peace be upon Him) as his successor, is also celebrated on the 18th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.
