Hezbollah dismisses Israeli threats

Lebanon has marked the 12th anniversary of the end of the 2006 Israeli war. Addressing a huge crowd in the capital Beirut, the Hezbollah Secretary General stressed that Israel was incapable then of achieving any military or political objectives. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said while Hezbollah has emerged victorious from Syria, Israel and the US are once again unable to enforce any conditions on the resistance movement. Press TV’s Mariam Saleh has the details.

US-Turkey spat

The United States has warned of more economic pressure on Turkey if Ankara refuses to release a jailed American pastor. A US official added that nothing has progressed thus far on Pastor Andrew Craig Brunson’s case. The official noted the US president is determined to take more punitive measures if Turkey fails to free the pastor. The White House also announced Donald Trump has a great deal of frustration over Turkey’s refusal to release the pastor. Earlier, Turkish President Rejep Tayyip Erdogan said his country will boycott US electronic products in retaliation for Washington’s sanctions.

Trump's aide controversy

Donald Trump's election campaign sues a former White House aide for allegedly breaching a confidentiality agreement. The arbitration request against Omarosa Manigault Newman came after she accused Trump of using racial slur. Newman has said the US president has been taped using the N-word on a TV show that he hosted for eleven years. Earlier, the US president took to twitter to deny the allegation and attack Newman. He called the African-American a dog and a crazed lowlife. The feud between the two former reality TV stars escalated after Newman published her new book. In it, Newman criticized Trump, saying his mental decline couldn’t be denied.

Catholic Church child abuse

Pennsylvania state attorney-general says Roman Catholic priests there, sexually abused thousands of children over a 70-year period in a pattern of abuse, deny and cover up. Josh Shapiro accused the dioceses of silencing victims through the weaponization of faith and a systematic cover-up campaign by their bishops. The revelations came as part of an 884-page report following a two-year investigation into cases of sexual child abuse by Pennsylvania priests. The findings were largely based on documents from secret archives kept by the dioceses, including handwritten confessions by priests. The report follows the resignation of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick last month. The former Washington archbishop is accused of abusing a 16-year-old boy decades ago.

Officials in Afghanistan’s Baghlan province say Taliban militants have attacked a military outpost there. Baghlan officials say the attack left 44 police and soldiers dead. The attack is the latest by the Taliban over the past week. On Tuesday, they overran an army base in the northern province of Faryab, killing 17 soldiers. To the southeast of the country, fighting is ongoing between the militants and the security forces for the control of Ghazni city. The residents, who have escaped the city, say the situation is tense.

Saudi war on Yemen

In Yemen, over a dozen people have been killed as the Saudi-led coalition launches an offensive on the Western port of Hudaydah. According to Yemen’s Health Ministry women and children are among the victims of the air and sea attacks on al-Durayhimi district. Nearly two dozen people are also injured. Yemeni officials say Saudi warships and warplanes prevent rescue forces and the Red Cross medical teams from reaching the al-Durayhimi district, south of hudaydah. The district has been the scene of fierce fighting between Ansarullah fighters and Saudi-backed mercenaries for the past several weeks. The Yemeni Defense Ministry says at least 180 militants have been killed and more than 130 injured during their latest attempt to capture the region.

China-US trade war

China has filed a complaint in the World Trade Organization against the US increase of tariffs on imported solar panels. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce says the US is violating WTO regulations and hurting Chinese companies’ trade interests. The ministry has asked the WTO to probe Washington’s action. US President, Donald Trump, has approved steep tariffs on solar panel imports and at the same time subsidized domestic renewable energy products. Washington has accused Beijing of using state incentives, subsidies, and tariffs to increase production. Trump’s move, however, has triggered an outcry at home. The US solar industry has warned that thousands of jobs would be shed due to the rising cost of imports.
