Bomb injures 5, including Chinese nationals, in Pakistan

A bombing attack has left at least six people — including three Chinese nationals — wounded in southwestern Pakistan.

A vehicle transporting Chinese engineers working on a mining project in the area came under attack on Saturday in the Dalbandin region of Balochistan Province.

Local sources said two paramilitary soldiers from the workers’ security detail and their driver were also wounded in the attack.

“The attacker, waiting in a small pickup truck along the route... [detonated] the vehicle when the bus carrying Chinese engineers came close to him,” said Dostain Dashti, a senior police officer in the region, which is located around 340 km southwest of the provincial capital, Quetta.

Saifullah Khaitran, a senior local administration official, confirmed the attack, adding that all those injured in the bombing were in stable condition.

Khaitran said the engineers were working on the Saindak project, a joint venture between Pakistan and China to extract gold, copper, and silver from an area close to the Iranian border.

Pakistan’s mineral-rich Balochistan Province is the site of long-running militancy.

China has chosen Pakistan as a main partner in its ambitious One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, which started in 2014 and aims to recreate the old Silk Road between the East and the West.
