Turkey warns US

Turkey has warned that US President Donald Trump’s decision to double steel and aluminum tariffs on Ankara would harm ties between the two countries. Turkish Foreign Ministry, in a statement, also vowed to retaliate against the measure, saying that Ankara would give the necessary response to Washington. The statement added that additional US trade tariffs on Ankara are against the rules of the World Trade Organization. Meanwhile, the Turkish lira fell over 16 percent to new historic lows against the dollar after Trump’s announcement. However, President Rejep Tayyip Erdogan claimed Turkey would emerge victorious in what he called an economic war with the US. The detention of an American pastor in Turkey is one of the main factors behind the escalation of tensions between the two sides.

Venezuela attack aftermath

Venezuela called on the International Criminal Police Organization to arrest an opposition lawmaker accused of involvement in last week's failed assassination attempt on President Nicolas Maduro. Julio Borges, who was the former speaker of the Venezuela National Assembly, is in a self-exile in Colombia. Venezuelan intelligence officers have so far arrested 10 suspects. Maduro has also called for explanation from the US and Colombia as he accuses them of being involved in the incident. Both the US and Colombia have denied the accusation. Last week, drones loaded with explosives went off close to a military event where Maduro was giving a speech.

Zimbabwe opposition rejects vote results

Zimbabwe's main opposition party has filed a legal challenge to the results of the country's presidential election. The Movement for Democratic Change accused the ruling ZANU-PF party and the election commission of ballot fraud in the July 30 vote. Judges have two weeks to rule on the legal challenge lodged by the MDC. The inauguration of President Emmerson Mnangagwa has also been delayed until then. Mnangagwa won 50.8 percent of the vote. MDC leader Nelson Chamisa won 44.3 percent. At least six people were killed in the post-election violence.

China defends Iran ties

China has once again defended its commercial relations with Iran, saying they do not harm the interests of any other country. China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday described its business and energy ties with Iran as reasonable, fair and lawful which it said should be respected and protected. The Ministry also reiterated its opposition to unilateral US sanctions against Iran, calling them "long-armed jurisdiction". The statements came days after US president Donald Trump said companies doing business with Iran would be barred from the United States. China is Iran’s biggest oil customer, importing more than 650,000 barrels per day from the country.

Romania protests

Romanian police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse anti-government protesters in the capital Bucharest. Officials said 100 people required medical attention after inhaling the gases. They said 10 police officers were also injured by hurled stones and bottles. Tens of thousands of people turned out for the anti-corruption protest, calling on the government to step down. Similar demonstrations were also held in some other main cities.

Saudi Yemen massacre

The United Nations Children's Fund strongly slammed Saudi Arabia for what it described as "relentless violence" against children during its aerial campaign on Yemen. UNICEF said nearly all children in Yemen were in need of humanitarian assistance due to the conflict. It said Riyadh was behind the single biggest attack on children during the war in Yemen. The UN agency particularly denounced the killing of dozens of children this week in a Saudi-led airstrike on a bus. The Rights body ‘Save the Children Germany’ also slammed the raid. It called for an immediate and independent investigation into recent attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure inside Yemen.

Seattle airport incident

A passenger plane stolen from Seattle-Tacoma international airport in the US state of Washington crashed  on Ketron Island, which is southwest of Tacoma, in south Puget Sound. Authorities said the person who had stolen the plane was a "suicidal" airline worker who had conducted an unauthorized takeoff. They said no passengers were on board. The police ruled out terrorism as a motive behind the incident. Local media reported that two F15 jets pursued the plane but were not involved in the crash.
