Sudden mountain torrent kills 8 people in northwest China

A sudden mountain torrent on Friday struck Baiyin City, northwest China's Gansu Province, caused roads blocked, houses flooded and vehicles collided and flushed into mud flows. As of the writing, 8 people were killed in floods.

A driving school near No.109 National Highway in the city was flooded at about 01:00 and dozens of people were stranded. Firefighters rushed to rescue immediately after receiving the message.

The access road was flooded and vehicles could not move forward. Firefighters had to march on foot to rescue with ropes and equipment. Many vehicles along the highway collided with each other in flash floods and some houses in the nearby village destroyed. More than 30 stranded residents were rescued.

Local government has launched the level III warning of flood control and drought relief, and various rescue and relief work is being carried out in an orderly manner.
