Venezuelans gather in support of Maduro after failed assassination attempt
Venezuelans have taken to the streets of Caracas in a show of support for President Nicolas Maduro following an assassination attempt on him.
The large numbers of supporters were holding signs emblazoned with Maduro's face massed in Caracas on Monday.
"We completely reject any intervention and any damage that they want to do to us, because (Venezuelan President) Nicolas Maduro is the people," said one supporter.
Meanwhile, Venezuela's attorney general has announced that full force of the law will be utilized to bring those behind the attempt on the president's life to justice.
"The site where the perpetrators stayed in the days before the assassination attempt has also been established. The explosive experts who armed the devices have been identified, (and) the first international connections of these people have already been established," said Tarek Saab.
"According to what we have investigated, the preliminary indictment of these terrible acts can be classified as the following: treason to the homeland; intentional attempted homicide qualified to the degree of the President of the Republic, Nicolas Maduro; attempted homicide and grave injuries to the wounded public servants; launching of an explosive device in public meetings; terrorism; association to commit a crime; and financing of terrorism," he added.
On Sunday, Venezuela arrested six "terrorists and hired killers" over a failed assassination attempt on Maduro.
Venezuela's president and his wife as well as top government officials escaped unharmed from the assassination attempt. However, the government said seven soldiers were wounded.
Maduro blamed Colombia for the attack, though an unknown rebel group later claimed responsibility.
The Venezuelan president often claims that the United States, which has imposed sanctions against officials in his government, is orchestrating attempts to topple him as part of a wider offensive against Latin American leaders defying the US hegemony.
