Car-ramming attack kills 4 foreign cyclists in Tajikistan

An injured cyclist receives treatment at the scene of a car accident in Tajikistan on July 29, 2018.

Four tourists, including two Americans, have been killed and three others injured by armed attackers in Tajikistan in what was initially reported a hit-and-run car accident.

The incident occurred on Sunday, when a car hit a group of seven tourists — two Americans, two Dutch nationals and three tourists from Swirzerland, France and the Netherlands — in the district of Danghara, south of the capital Dushanbe.

The car then fled the scene and sparked a police manhunt.

“Three foreigners were killed at the scene and another died in hospital,” the Interior Ministry said.

It said the three injured had received medical treatment.

Authorities later announced that a 21-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the incident, and that two other suspects were killed during a police operation.

Interior Minister Ramazon Hamro Rahimzoda later gave more details and said the suspects “had knives and firearms.” He said “one tourist received a knife wound and is being given medical assistance. The victim’s condition is stable.”

The minister said police are pursuing other suspects.

“We are considering all possibilities,” Rahimzoda said of the criminal investigation. “We can’t say if it is an act of terror.”

The US Embassy in Dushanbe confirmed in a statement that two of the dead were American citizens, but did not provide further details “due to privacy concerns.”

It said that “we will continue to work with Tajik authorities” in an ongoing investigation into the incident.
