Iran’s development in water maintenance, treatment and irrigation

Wastewater Treatment Units

Iran is basically an arid country; it is located in the mid-latitude belt of arid and semi-arid regions of the Earth. Iran as a water-stressed country, has taken measures to address its water crisis.

Iran’s latest focus is on beneficial methods of irrigation, as about 80 to 90 percent of Iran’s accessible waters are now said to be used in agriculture, with half of that going to waste. Applying drip irrigation system and depending more on dryland farming system instead of irrigation farming system are among some of the measures taken to tackle the water crisis.

Development of water intensive industries, growing water thirsty crops and overconsumption of water resources are among the main problems that have caused water crisis in Iran; an already arid country.

Experts however blame the problem mostly on poor management. Though late, authorities have started taking actions in this matter. These are some of those actions: running industrial and urban water treatment plants, halting plans for 14 dams in different provinces, reviving the Hoor-al-Azim lagoon over the past year and a half, allocating 231.500 US to revive Lake Urmia, river planning for a stretch of 412 kilometers, blocking 1200 wells and many others. In terms of agriculture to convince the farmers to switch to other jobs authorities need to come up with ideas that they welcome.
