Airbus reveals record-breaking solar-powered drone

Airbus solar-powered drone

Airbus, one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers, has put its record-breaking solar-powered drone into mass production.

The pioneering aerospace company says it’s opening a production facility for its Zephyr aircraft in the English town of Farnborough.

The facility would produce up to 30 aircraft a year. Zephyr holds the world’s record for the longest flight duration without refueling. It managed to stay afloat for over two weeks, and reached stratospheric altitudes, around 21 kilometers above earth’s surface.

But Airbus wants to extend the aircraft’s range and keep it flying for over three months without recharging. The aircraft has a wingspan of 25 meters and is made of lightweight composites.
