Brazil: Last of his tribe emerges in newly released Amazon footage

Amazon

An indigenous Amazon man believed to be the last surviving member of his tribe has been sighted after 22 years in the state of Rondonia, footage released by the Brazilian government indigenous agency FUNAI shows on Friday.

Known as the 'last of his tribe,' the man has reportedly lived for the past 22 years in the Amazon without contact with the outside world.

Footage shows him swinging his axe at a tree half-naked and in apparent good health.

The man is known to be the last survivor of tribes purged by farmers and land-grabbers from the 70s onward, with five more members of the same tribe having been killed in 1995.

FUNAI has reportedly provided land and left axes, machetes and seeds for the man so he could sustain his solitary lifestyle.
