Polish prime minister chides Trump, says Russia’s threat not over yet
Poland, a member of NATO, has criticized US President Donald Trump over his overture to Russia, saying he should have understood that there was still a huge threat from Russia which needed more consolidation of NATO efforts in Eastern Europe.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Tuesday that Trump was wrong to think that Russia was no longer a threat for NATO.
“This (Russia’s) aggression hasn’t diminished in any way. President Trump must have come to the same conclusions,” said Morawiecki, a day after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a controversial summit in Finland.
The Polish premier, who was speaking in a news conference, said there was still every need for NATO to strengthen its eastern flank, to which Poland is a key contributor. He claimed that Russia’s threatening actions in Ukraine, which is sandwiched between Russia and Poland, had not shown any sign of abating.
“NATO’s eastern flank needs to be strengthened because Russia’s aggressive policy has not, unfortunately, ended,” the Polish prime minister said.
Poland, a key US ally in Eastern Europe, has hosted new NATO deployments since a crisis erupted in eastern Ukraine. Russia has seen NATO deployments as unnecessary and even threatening to its security, warning that more NATO presence near its borders would increase the risk of confrontation.
Morawiecki’s call on Trump comes amid heightened tension between the US and key NATO members in Europe. Trump has accused the Europeans of not spending enough on the alliance.
Trump’s meeting with Putin in Helsinki met fierce criticism both in Europe and inside the US, with some opponents accusing him of turning a blind eye to the Russian animosity toward the US and Europe. Critics believe Trump’s overtures to Russia are meant to cover up Moscow’s alleged interference in the US presidential election in 2016.
