A Chinese court has sentenced to death a man convicted of stabbing to death nine children almost three months ago in northern China.

The suspect, identified as Zhao Zewei, attacked middle schoolers on their way home from school in Shaanxi Province in April.

He killed seven girls and two boys and injured ten others before being arrested.

The Yulin City Intermediate People’s Court said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspect’s motivation for the attack had been to vent his anger and frustration at the circumstances of his life and the bullying he had been subjected to as a student at school.

“The defendant Zhao Zewei’s criminal motives were despicable,” the court said, adding it had convicted him of intentional homicide.

Zhao, 28, was charged in May.

He has appealed the decision, according to the court.

China has strict gun control and rare violent crime compared to many other countries, but knife attacks have made the headlines in the country in recent years.

Back in January 2017, a man attacked children with kitchen knife in a kindergarten in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and wounded 11 kids.

In another incident, in February 2016, an assailant wounded 10 children in Haikou, in the southern island province of Hainan, before killing himself.

In 2014, reports said a man stabbed three children and a teacher to death and wounded several others at a primary school. He carried out the attack after the school refused to enroll his daughter.

Such incidents have prompted Chinese authorities to increase security around schools. Campaigners have also called for more research into the causes of such violent crimes against children.
