‘Carnival of protests’ awaits Trump in UK

Thousands of Britons say have promised to welcome US President Donald Trump with a “carnival of protests” when he heads to the UK on his first state visit to the country on Thursday.

Protest organizers say preparations are taking on “a life of their own” as dozens of activist groups have joined forces with a long list of politicians and major British figures, who have demanded Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Theresa May to retract the invitation, The Guardian reported Monday.

On Thursday afternoon, when Trump is expected to stay at the US ambassador’s residence in Regent’s Park, London, protesters will greet him with a “wall of sound.”

Trump and his wife, Melania, will then be encountered by protesters at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, where they will attend a dinner for 100 guests.

Meanwhile, Top Trump Targets, a website co-founded by a Member of Parliament, has been encouraging people to donate to groups the American head of state “has sought to exclude or marginalize.”

“There will be a lot of people on Friday who just want to be angry, but imagine if the legacy of this Trump visit was a massive funding boost to all the organizations he hates,” said Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy. “Standing with these organizations is probably the best thing we can do.”

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the protest will be a six-meter “angry Trump baby” balloon that is slated to be flown over London on Friday, after earning Mayor Sadiq Khan’s approval.

Trump is a monster and Britons don’t want him in their country, a British scholar says.

Khan has been one of the main opponents of the visit and has responded to Trump’s verbal attacks against the UK and London’s security on several occasions.

Also on Friday, Women’s March London – which brought 100,000 people to the streets of the capital in 2017 – will assemble outside the BBC offices in Portland Place before marching to Parliament Square.

Organizers of the Bring the Noise rally have asked protesters to bring “pots and pans out of the kitchen ... and on to the streets, banging to show our disapproval and claiming our political voice in public space.”

Stop Trump is the title of another rally in London which will also start outside the BBC’s headquarters and end in Trafalgar Square. Organizers say tens of thousands are expected to attend.

“We are protesting against Trump, but we are also protesting against the politics of discrimination, bigotry and hate. People are making the connection – this is not just happening in the States, but across the EU and the UK,” said Shaista Aziz, one of the organizers of the London march.
