JORDAN ROCKED BY PROTESTS & SINO-U.S. TENSIONS

SINO-U.S. TENSIONS The US is stepping up its rhetoric against china over the East Asian country’s presence in the South China Sea. US Defense Secretary James Mattis has accused China of 'intimidation and coercion' in the disputed waters of the sea. Mattis was speaking at a security summit in Singapore. He claimed China's militarization on manmade islands in the South China Sea stands in stark contrast to what Mattis called the openness of the US strategy. The US always sides with China’s adversaries when a dispute arises between Beijing and its rivals anywhere, regardless of the need to first apportion blame in disputes. JORDAN ROCKED BY PROTESTS The biggest demonstrations in years have been shaking Jordan since Wednesday. Tax rises and austerity measures have brought thousands of protesters to the streets across the country. They say the new tax bill will further worsen living standards. Many Jordanians feel financially squeezed by a government they perceive as corrupt. The planned tax rise came after a series of price increases on staples such as bread and fuel. Jordan's capital is one of the most expensive in the Arab world.
